In Chiapas we can see different tribes that speaks their native dialects and few are the ones that knows Spanish specially the old people. The tribes that you can see there dressed in their own native dresses are the Chamulas, the most famous ones the Taraumaras Indians, the Celtas and others. Each ones speak their own language (dialects) and are very different dressed. This Indians are the ones that carve this masks by hand on wood. Also you are going to see masks that are done in Guerrero where the mines are full of semi precious stones like Lapis Lazuli, Turquoise, Malachite, Quartz and Eye Tiger. They represent the face of Pakal the King of Palenque, Mayan city situated in the jungles of Chiapas. This king was found in the tallest Pyramid called Pyramid of the Inscriptions. King Pakal was buried there inside the pyramid and inside the tomb they found this mask but in Jade. Now a days you can see that mask in the one of the most beautiful museums that Mexico has "The National Anthropological Museum of History" in Mexico City, in the Mayan Room. |
